It may now be called "Athénée" but in the minds and hearts of Athenians it will always remain as the legendary "Zonar's", with that invisible glamour of old cosmopolitan Athens. A gathering place for intellectuals, writers and artists such as the Nobelist Odysseas Elytis, Nikos Gatsos or Giorgos Katsibalis, there was no celebrity who came to Athens (like Anthony Quinn or Sophia Lauren) without visiting it. The cafe has been housed in the building of the "Metochiko Tameio Stratou" (Army Share Fund Building) since 1940, the work of architects Vasilis Kassandras and Leonidas Bonis, combining Art Deco and classicist elements.
