The meeting place at Loumidis' cafe

In 1938 Loumidis' coffee shop opened at 38 Stadiou Street, next to the old bookstore of “Estia”. Apart from the coffee shop on the ground floor, there was also the famous loft, which for years was a meeting place for writers and artists. Its regulars included prominent writers and poets such as Kostas Varnalis, Nanos Valaoritis, Takis Sinopoulos, Miltos Sachtouris, the Nobelist Odysseas Elytis, Nikos Gkatsos and the famous composer Manos Chatzidakis. Elytis said that "this is where we took our new loves (literary and non-literary) with Gatsos". At the beginning of the 1960s, Loumidis' loft had run its course, while in the first years of the 70s Loumidis;' coffee shop closed down and its loft was for ever lost. The writer and scholar of underground literature and culture, Leonidas Christakis, a regular patron of the loft, wrote all about it in his book Loumidis: An ignored nursery of poets (Spiliotis Publications, 2005).
